Learning about Art
Learning about Bullying
|
Students go to the museum for the art activities. They begin with a short lesson that covers concepts in art and introduces the project. During the lesson, students discuss art collections, emotion and conflict in art. They see pictures of Guernica and other art that portrays conflict. They are asked to identify the subject matter of several works (landscapes, cityscapes, portraiture), and also discuss the meaning of the art. In discussing Guernica, the teacher asks the students to describe the images they see. After identifying objects in the painting, students learn the context, and discuss the emotions that the painting portrays. Students are asked to relate this to their understanding of bullying.
The project they are prompted to create relates to bullying. Students are asked to create a drawing of a superhero who could prevent bullying. They then split into small groups, and are guided throughout the drawing activity by CSU art students. Some students use a brainstorming sheet to think about scenes of bullying and imagine a superpower that could help. Others draw an image right away, or decide to create a comic strip to tell a story. At the end of the time, they regroup to share their work. |
