Learning in Dance:
Learning about Bullying:Students discuss:
|
In the dance session, students explore communicating through movement. They enter the dance floor and lie down while the teacher asks them to observe their space. They then start to practice different ways of moving. By considering space, time, energy and body, (the basic elements of dance,) students learn to chose how they move. After introducing these concepts, the teacher asks the group to watch as she demonstrates the same sequence of motions with two different emotions. The mimed sequence shows someone resting to what another person does with joy, and then with sadness and hurt. Students are asked to relate this to bullying and the way people act towards each other at school. During the second part of the lesson, students create their own sequence of actions that portrays a story or emotion. The students get time to experiment, and then they show each other the motion series they created.
The students are prompted to change their motions in reaction to the way the people around them move. This exercise teaches them to be aware of others, not just themselves. |
